Small Business, Big Crisis Over ₹1 Lakh Crore in MSME Loans Vanish in 5 Years

Shocking news has come to light about small businesses in India. Banks have had to write off, or give up on collecting, more than ₹1 lakh crore in loans to micro and small enterprises (MSEs) over the last five years. This is a huge amount of money – imagine a stack of ₹100 notes reaching higher than Mount Everest!

What’s Going On?

From 2020 to 2024, banks in India couldn’t get back ₹1,08,608 crore that they had lent to small businesses. This money was split between two types of businesses:

  • Small factories and workshops lost ₹43,789 crore.
  • Small service businesses (like shops or repair services) lost ₹64,819 crore.

The problem got worse over time:

  • In 2020, banks wrote off ₹20,055 crore
  • By 2023, this grew to ₹28,392 crore
  • In 2024, it came down a bit to ₹20,261 crore

Government Banks Hit Hardest

Government-owned banks, called public sector banks, faced the biggest losses. They had to write off ₹73,358 crore. Private banks lost less, at ₹32,098 crore. Foreign banks operating in India only lost ₹1,013 crore.

Why This Matters

Every time a bank writes off a loan, it usually means a business has failed. This could mean:

  1. People losing their jobs
  2. Families losing their income
  3. Dreams of business owners being shattered

However; the good news is that the banks will write-off less loans in 2024, than in 2023. It can mean that things are getting better for small businesses.

What’s Being Done?

The government knows this is a big problem. India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has announced a plan to help. The Government will work with the Banks, to support the small businesses. This will result in lesser businesses closing down.

Why Should We Care?

Small businesses are super important for India. They:

  • Give jobs to millions of people
  • Help grow the country’s economy
  • Bring new ideas and products to market

When small businesses struggle, it’s bad for everyone in India.

What Next?

To fix this problem, a few things need to happen:

  • Banks need to be more careful about who they lend money to
  • The government needs to keep helping small businesses
  • Business owners need to learn more about managing money

The Big Question arises here

Can India turn this big problem into an opportunity to strengthen small businesses? We don’t know yet, but it’s important for India’s future that we find a way to help these businesses thrive.

Remember that behind these large numbers are real people and families. Helping small businesses goes beyond just financial support; it’s about empowering dreams and building a stronger India. It is crucial for India’s future that we find effective ways to help these businesses succeed.
