Muharram Bank Holiday Today: Banks will remain closed in different states in India on Wednesday (July 17), on account of Muharram. The states where banks will remain closed today include Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha. One must note that even on bank holidays people can conduct their routine financial transactions and make payments online via net banking as online banking services will continue to operate as usual.
Meanwhile, July 17 is also a bank holiday for Meghalaya due to U Tirot Sing Day, commemorating the legacy of the prominent freedom fighter U Tirot Sing. One should note that Muharram marks the first month in the Islamic calendar.
U Tirot Sing Day:
U Tirot Sing Day is a regional festival in the Indian state of Meghalaya. The day is celebrated to commemorate Tirot Sing, a freedom fighter who fought against the British in the 19th century. According to the RBI Bank Holiday Calendar, both public and private sector banks in India remain closed on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
There are as many as 12 bank holidays including regular bank holidays in the month of July on account of certain occasions including Beh Dienkhlam, MHIP Day, Kang (Rathajatra), Drukpa Tshe-zi, Harela, Muharram/Ashoora, and U Tirot Sing Day.
