Eid Bank Holiday

Eid Bank Holiday: Banks in some states will remain closed on Thursday (April 11) on account of Ramzan-Id (Eid-Ul-Fitr), according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bank holiday list. Apart from regional and national holidays, both private and public sector banks in India remain closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

Banks remained shut in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday due to Eid. Meanwhile, Banks will remain shut across the country on April 11, 2024, except for Chandigarh, Gangtok, Kochi, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram for the Eid celebration.

Notably, the commencement of Eid al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the crescent moon, denoting the beginning of the month of Shawwal, which is the 10th month in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. Given that lunar months mostly span between 29 to 30 days, Muslims usually await validation of the Eid’s date until the evening preceding its arrival.

In certain cities including Delhi, Hyderabad, and Lucknow, the crescent moon was not visible. Hence, Eid festival will be celebrated on Thursday. However, in Kerala, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir, the crescent was sighted on April 9, thus Eid is celebrated in these states today (April 10), together with the Islamic nations in West Asia.

RBI categorizes bank holidays into three categories: Negotiable Instruments Act Holidays, Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) Holidays, and Bank Account Closing Holidays.

This week, banks will see a prolonged weekend, as there will be five back-to-back bank holidays this week to mark different occasions including Gudi Padwa, Ugadi and Telugu New Year, Bohag Bihu and Eid, and regular holidays (second Saturday and Sunday).

Can People Use Digital Banking Services On Bank Holidays?

In India, the RBI releases the complete list of bank holidays for the year. The RBI holiday calendar lists bank holidays based on factors such as national or state holidays, cultural or religious observance, operational requirements, and government announcements.

It is always good to check the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Holiday calendar to know when banks in different parts of India will remain closed to avoid confusion and inconvenience.

One must note that even on bank holidays people can conduct their routine financial transactions and make payments online via net banking as online banking services will continue to operate as normal.
