Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Saturday that her government had approved the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana under which women beneficiaries who are entitled will get Rs 2,500 as monthly assistance, one of the long-standing promises the BJP made while campaigning.
“We had promised that the poor sisters of Delhi would get Rs 2,500 per month. Today, we have put our stamp on this. We have approved the scheme and made a provision of Rs 5,100 crore for it in the Budget (for this fiscal) so that we can begin extending benefits under the scheme,” she said.
A committee led by the Chief Minister has been formed for the execution of the scheme, Gupta mentioned, and it will also feature her Cabinet associates Parvesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, and Kapil Mishra.
Gupta added, “The scheme has been approved today, for which I congratulate the sisters of Delhi… I would like to assure them that all the work needed for their suraksha (security) and the promises related to their samriddhi (prosperity) will be fulfilled soon,”.
After the announcement, the Delhi government released a statement indicating that the plan will utilize cutting-edge technology to guarantee transparency, efficiency, and smooth distribution of financial benefits.
Although the Delhi government has introduced a Rs 5,501-crore fund as part of the ‘Nari Sashaktikaran’ (women empowerment) initiative, the specifics about the eligibility requirements for beneficiaries are still not clear. Neither the government nor the Chief Minister has indicated who will be eligible for the scheme.
In addition to the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, Gupta revealed further initiatives being discussed for the empowerment and safety of women. This entails a rise in CCTV camera installations, the setup of Pink Police Control Rooms (PCRs) run entirely by women to boost security in public areas, and the establishment of one-stop centers offering police help, medical care, legal assistance, and counseling services for women.
