What Is GeM Portal?
Gem which stands for Government-e-Marketplace is an online platform for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), traders, and service providers to list their products/services online.
Different government entities then procure these listed goods and services as per their requirement. GeM intends to improve the speed, efficiency, and transparency in the procurement process. GeM registration plays a critical role in the promotion of micro, small and medium manufacturing industries and provides them with equal opportunity to participate in public procurement.
GeM facilitates online procurement of common-use Goods & Services required by various Government Departments /Organisations/PSUs. The platform provides the tools of e-bidding, reverse e-auction, and demand aggregation to support government users and achieve the best value for their money.

- Now, buyers have the choice to cancel the Product contract(s) even if the invoice has been generated by the seller-provided 15 days have expired from the delivery period.
- 18 Banks have enabled GeM Pool Account.
- GeM now makes sure that at least three vendors have participated and provided items from at least two distinct OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in order to improve fair participation in Bid/RA. If the buyer wants to move on with less than three resellers or two OEMs/brands, they must upload the Competent Authority’s clearance.

Documents Required for GeM Portal Registration:
The documents you need to submit for GeM portal registration include:
- PAN Card
- Company Registration, Udyog Aadhar, or LLP-associated requirements
- TIN or VAT number (if applicable)
- A copy of the canceled cheque.
- A separate address and identity proof.
- The proof of the applicant’s bank account and the supportive KYC documentation.
- The Trademark certification.
- Documentation of the type of services or products provided by the organization.
- The address proof of the head office of your company.
- Mobile number (which has been connected with your Aadhar Card)
- MSME documentation (if applicable)
- NSIC papers (if applicable)
- The latest paperwork of ITR.
Providing the aforementioned documentation will make an individual eligible to complete the gem seller registration.
In addition to the documents listed above, the following will also be necessary if you are registering as a start-up:
- DIPP Number –
- Mobile Number linked with DIPP
Meanwhile, the following will also be necessary if you are registering as an MSE: –
- UAM Number (Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum Number)

GeM Portal Registration Process for Buyers:
The pre-requisites for primary user registration are:
- Aadhaar number of the user.
- Mobile number that is linked with Aadhaar.
- Email IDs hosted by NIC, only NIC-registered email IDs are allowed, this facilitates users from over 1600 domains to freely register and transact on GeM.
- Verifying authority details such as name, mobile number, and NIC registered email ID.
The procedure of gem portal registration can seem a bit complicated and intricate for those applying for the first time. Hence, if you, too, are a novice in this aspect, then be sure to abide by the following steps.
Step 1- Visit the official website of GeM Portal.
Step 2- Click on the “GeM Seller Registration” tab, available right below the “Sign Up” tab.
Step 3- After that, it will redirect you to the page of “terms and conditions” of the website.
Step 4- Make sure that you go through the module meticulously before tapping on the “accept” option.
Step 5- After accepting the “terms and conditions” of the portal, you will be directed to the GeM portal registration form.
Step 6- Now, enter the required details. You will have two options to choose the type of registration you are comfortable with – Aadhar and PAN. In each case, you will be asked to submit some fundamental details about it, such as your name, Card number, DOB, Address, etc.
Step 7- Enter the mobile number that is currently active and in use. You may be asked to verify the same again by re-entering it. Tap on the “Send OTP” option after verification.
Step 8- You will receive OTP on your registered phone number. You will need to enter it in the same section and authenticate it.
Step 9- After that, you will need to verify your email (if available) in the same manner. Once this is done, Tap on the “create account” option at the end to complete the gem seller registration.

How to Check the GeM registration status?
The steps you need to follow to check the GeM registration status include:
Step 1: Visit the GeM registration portal.
Step 2: On the top right side of the website, you will find an option to track your Application.
Step 3: Enter the tracking/order id.
Step 4: You can now view the status of your GeM registration and the progress of your process.
After successful registration on the GeM portal, you will receive your own GeM seller ID and login credentials, which you have to use when you log in.

Q.3 Is a GeM invoice certified for making payments?
Yes, the GeM invoice is certified for making payment via GeM. However, the printout of the GeM invoice is invalid for making payments.
Q.4 When the delivery period has passed, is the buyer still able to cancel the agreement?
If the seller has not raised an invoice, the buyer may request a cancellation as soon as the delivery period has passed. The vendor is not consulted for such a request, and the order is immediately canceled.
